Los Pelambres is a mine site in Chile, approximately 200 kilometres north of Santiago. The remote location is 1,600 metres above sea level and subject to heavy snow loads. The land available for the camp wasn’t level or large enough to accommodate a 1,000 person camp. Tecno Fast ATCO S.A. (TFA) instead designed an innovative, three-tier facility connected to two camps.
The first camp, Camp Chacay accommodates approximately 300 permanent mine administration personnel. It involved the refurbishing of existing client-owned units.
The second camp, Hotel Mina, accommodates 680 permanent mine operators and construction staff. The dormitories are connected by two, 15 metre elevators, which link workers to the main kitchen, lounge and recreation areas. This feature eliminates the need for staff to venture outside into the frequent snow, wind and cold.
Two common recreation areas offer 10 metre high ceilings with a skylight, natural growing plants and amenities such as ping-pong and billiards, an exercise room and a gymnasium. Bedrooms are finished with hotel-style carpeting to create a warm atmosphere and minimize noise levels.
TFA completed this project in seven months and was recognized by the client for having the best safety and environmental record of any contractor. |
